Burnt Bourbon

Smokey.  Herbal.  Sweet and Zesty.  Burnt Bourbon evokes the flavor and aromas of a dark lounge with a bay window that overlooks an apple orchard.  All from the the comfort of a high back leather chair.  Simple ingredients ensure that just about anyone can mix this drink for friends and family without searching far and wide for something you will never use again.  Burnt Bourbon was first served at MOD Palm Springs to over 200 people in a single evening.  Other cocktails were served, but this was the favorite of the weekend.

1.5 ounces Bourbon (nothing fancy, nothing too cheap)

.5 ounce Mezcal

1.5 ounces Unfiltered Apple Juice (Simply brand works if you cannot get fresh pressed)

.5 ounce fresh squeezed Lemon Juice

.3 ounce Cinnamon Syrup*

2 drops Cardamom bitters (Scrappy’s Cardamom Bitters is our favorite)

Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass or shaker.  DO NOT SHAKE!  Stir well with ice.  Strain into a double rocks glass with one large ice cube.  Garnish with a large rubbed sage leaf.

*Homemade cinnamon syrup makes this drink pop with fall flavor.  In a saucepan dissolve 1 cup sugar in 1 cup water.  Add 2 fresh cinnamon sticks and bring to a boil.  Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes.  Turn off heat, cover and let sit for 15 minutes.  Strain into a glass container and keep in refrigerator for about 30 days.  Use in cocktails, coffee, tea and over vanilla ice cream.
