Murky Lagoon

Did you know that the tiki mug was invented to hide ugly cocktails?  Well, that may not exactly be true but its a good story.  The Murky Lagoon tastes like fall on a tropical island if there were seasons in the tropics.  As the name may imply, you know you mixed this one correctly if its cloudy greenish blue in color.  Don't be afraid of a quick paddle in the Murky Lagoon, just drink more for courage.

  • 1.5 ounces Cane Rum (Cane Run, 10 Cane or a Jamaican Silver)
  • .5 ounce Blackstrap Rum (Cruzan is best)
  • .5 ounce Blue Curaçao (try to find 60 proof vs. 30 proof)
  • 2 ounces Guava Nectar
  • 1 ounce Pineapple Juice
  • .75 ounce Fresh Lemon Juice
  • .5 ounce Dark Molasses
  • .5 ounce Spiced Brown Sugar Syrup (Monin, Torani or homemade*)

Add all ingredients to a shaker with plenty of ice.  Shake lightly and strain into tiki mug filled with crushed ice.  Garnish with very large twists of lemon peel over the top of the mug.

*To make your own spiced brown sugar syrup, simmer 1 cup dark brown sugar with 1 cup boiling water till sugar is fully dissolved.  Add a cinnamon stick, 2 cloves and a fresh vanilla bean and simmer while stirring for 2 minutes.  Turn off heat and cover.  Let stand for 10 minutes.  Remove the spices, let cool and store in a glass bottle.  Keeps in the refrigerator for about 30 days.
