Many podcast listeners ask us about the weekend tiki events. They usually want to know what to expect. What to bring. What to wear. How much fun will they have? They want tips to enjoy their weekend. Well, thats what this podcast is about. We invite listeners and Tiki Caliente attendees into our hotel room for a LIVE podcast. Highlights of the show include cocktails, listener Q&A, BBQ Tiki Ribs by Michael Contos, plenty of music, and everyones favorite game “Whats in Kalani’s Bra.” It wouldn’t be a great show without some cocktail recipes, see below for those. Mod Palm Springs, coming this October

Jeannie’s Wish

2 oz Deadhead Rum

1.5 oz Cranberry Juice (make sure “cranberries” is the first ingredient and no added sugar)

1 oz Pineapple Juice (not from concentrate, Dole canned is great)

2/3 oz Lemon Juice

1/4 oz brown sugar syrup

1/4 oz spiced brown sugar syrup by Monin

1 Dash Orange Bitters (Angostura)

Shake all ingredients with cubed ice. Strain into a small Brandy snifter. Garnish with pineapple and drunken dried cranberries.

Sunshine and Starshine have just returned from their adventure to Mojave Oasis in the fabulous California Desert. After sharing a large cocktail we recap some of our favorite memories from the event and look forward to our next journey to the hottest tiki campground this side of Mars. On this weeks podcast you will want to overlook the slight audio quality issues and stick to it.

Our first segment brings us a cocktail in the works. Using the aged Deadhead Rum, Sunshine is working on a tasty libation to be served at the upcoming tiki events Mojave Oasis and Tiki Caliente 5. Cocktails never come out right the first time. Or fifth or tenth. A good drink is often played with over time and individual bartenders like to make their own adjustments to drinks as well. Sunshine plays with his concoctions a few times before unleashing them on the ladies who can give feedback on overall servability since they have different tastes. And, when a cocktail pleases all three ladies we know we have something special. So, our goal is to take our I Dream of Jeannie inspired cocktail to a place that will make anyone feel like they have a mystical bottle trapped minion. Aloha and welcome to the Zen Tiki Lounge, the tiki bar that lives in your head. Sunshine, Starshine and Kalani sit at the bar for the first time this new year. Sunshine is very happy to now own a turntable and has converted some exotica albums for the podcast. This week we listen to Arthur Lyman’s Hawaiian Sunset and Martin Denny’s Quiet Village. Can’t go wrong with those two classic examples of great vintage exotica. Our cocktail this week was inspired by all the fresh citrus we have ripening in Southern California. Fresh grapefruit, limes and oranges combine with El Dorado 15, Plantation 5 and 10 Cane rums, a little homemade falernum and some brown sugar syrup. A zesty drink packed with vitamin C and exotic spices. Speaking of vinyl albums, Kalani brought in some more classics like Carmen Miranda, Hilo Hattie and Webley Edwards. Plenty to keep us relaxing on our bar stools during the next few podcasts. And if you ever wanted to hear the ladies sing you will love this episode. A stiff drink removes just enough inhibition for a spontaneous duet of Kokomo. Fun!

The Unnamed Cocktail

1 ounce El Dorado 15

1 ounce Plantation 5

1 ounce 10 Cane

3 ounces fresh grapefruit, lime and orange juices, any proportion you like

1/2 ounce falernum, homemade is best

1/2 ounce brown sugar syrup

Add all to blender and pulse with 2 cups crushed or cracked ice. Pour into large tiki mug and enjoy a stiff cocktail packed with cold fighting vitamin C

On this podcast we visit the Casita of Rory (Wildsville Man) Snyder. Our third on the road podcast takes us to Palm Springs, CA to chat about the upcoming Taboo event hosted by Amy Boylan and Rory Snyder. As with any of our shows we start with a beverage, this time called Calsita, a drink Rory is crafting for the Taboo event this October 5-7. Amy shares some valuable insight on area tiki events, room parties and a little insider info as well. If you don’t already know Amy, she is one of the partners currently operating the Tonga Hut, LA’s original tiki bar. We also discuss Sunshines goal of drinking every drink on the Tonga Hut menu to become a member of the Loyal Order of Drooling Bastards. Next up, Rory tells about the great music acts you can expect to hear at Taboo including : Jason Lee and the Riptides, The Deadbeat Daddies, a book signing by P Moss of Frankie’s Tiki Room, and the Swank Bastards…just to name a few. Over the course of the podcast we sample a cocktail that has literally been sitting a shelf since 1968, chat about everything from bidets in hotel rooms to tiki hell. After many months of waiting and testing cocktails, Tiki Caliente came and went. The weather in Palm Springs was perfect for cocktails by the pool all day and all night. The ZTL crew enjoyed hitting all the room parties. Special mention to The Hair of the Dog Party and Flaming Tiki, two of our favorite rooms and cocktails. Music by the Martini Kings poolside with Sonny Moon were another of the big highlights. Meeting Sonny Moon at an after party later in the evening was the bees knees. The Hula Girls played Sunshines favorite song Volcano. That makes him very happy. And for those that were lucky enough to see the Deadbeat Daddies on Friday, you know what a great performance it was. Great to see them at the event and the first time we were able to see the guys live. Then of course there was Moai Man, Listeners carrying around their Big Orange Richard mugs by PopTiki, our funner than fun room party, using pool floaties for innuendo, the LIVE podcast with great listeners in our hotel room, and so much more. Ginger’s Passion

1 oz Guava Juice

1.5 ounces Passion Fruit Juice

.5 ounce Lemon Juice

.25 ounce Passoa Passion Fruit Liquor

.5 ounce DeKuyper Ginger Liquor

.5 ounce Stirring’s Ginger Liquor or Canton

.5 ounce Cruzan Estate Light Rum with Ginger Infusion or another very dry white rum*

*In a .750ml bottle Cruzan Estate Light Rum, add 2 ounces freshly juiced ginger. You can purchase ginger juice as a substitute but increase to 2.5 ounces.

Shake all together with ice. Strain into glass filled with crushed ice. Garnish with a cherry and pickled ginger on a skewer.

The Luckubus

1 ounce White Grapefruit Juice

1 ounce Pineapple Juice

.5 ounce Lemmon Juice

.5 ounce Orgeat

1 ounce Sunshine’s Very Spicy Rum*

3/4 ounce Vodka

Shake all together with ice. Pour into double old fashioned glass filled with crushed ice. Garnish with Pink Grapefruit wedge. *Click here for the recipe for Sunshine’s Very Spicy Rum

Ok, so our title this week is a little misleading. But we did find out that there is a fairly long list of animals that actually enjoy inebriation as much as we do. Those elephants, bears, moose and the like sure love a good bender after a long day in the wilderness. Who wouldn’t? Sunshine and Starshine are in the Zen Tiki Lounge discussing a lot more than drunk furry friends. We have a good deal of listener email, including a great question that explains what a “room crawl” is. For those that correctly engage in such an activity, crawling can very well become part of the fun. Sunshine recalls a time when he had to pick himself up off the floor of a random hotel room and try to remember his own room number. Ohhh, the fun. Starshine is simply along for the drink this week.
