SQ Cktl ShakerAs the title of this weeks show may have led you to believe, there is a little tiki bar science on our show this time.  Specifically, people often ask about the importance of ice and which kind to use in a cocktail.  The simplest answer is to follow the recipe and use the kind of ice (crushed, cubed, cracked etc.) that the mixologist called for.  But for a little more science on this subject Sunshine mixes a few drinks with different kinds of ice and shows why it is important to follow directions.  We do this with a Planters Punch, which is the first of two drinks this week.  Our drinks come from the “2 in 1 International Recipe Card Collection.”  Remember those index card sets in the back of Nanas bar?  Filled with mayonnaise based appetizers and very stiff cocktails.  Well we dug it out and chose two drinks and one appetizer for each of the next four shows.  After Planters Punch we try a simple orange banana loaf and a Champagne Cocktail as an after dinner drink.  Simply amazing.  With a few drinks in us we feel liberal enough to discuss plants with racist names, Tupperware gossip, our facebook yard sale and electronic cigarettes.  And then we throw in an update on two of the fastest approaching tiki events.  In April we have Mojave Oasis.  April 12-14 you will want to part of an intimate camping/trailer event in the California desert called Mojave Oasis.  Check out the link or listen to the podcast for more details.  You can also catch the hosts of Zen Tiki Lounge at Tiki Caliente 5 which is May 17-19 in fabulous Palm Springs, California.  Both events feature not only the warmth of the California sun but also the lovely warmth of tiki and mid century enthusiasts from all over the country gathering for Ohana and plenty of cocktails, exotic music and shenanigans.  Don’t miss either event.  Rounding out the show we share some sad news about the closing of world famous Bahooka on March 10.  This Los Angeles area tiki establishment has been around for decades and we highly encourage you to stop by and have a steak and mai tai before its too late.  You may even be able to purchase some of the kitsch from the very restaurant itself as the start to close down.  :(   On a much brighter note you can catch a full hour interview with Sunshine Tiki on the Ray Boylan show.  Ray hosts a weekly show on LaTalkRadio.com and often features tikiphiles such as Sunshine and many great bands, artists, authors etc.  Check out this most recent episode and the back catalog using the link.  Lastly, we want to offer you a way to get a copy of the new book by our good friend Everett Peacock.  Escape from Hanalei is the latest read from Everett, Sunshine Tiki approved and loved.  Listen to the show to find out how you can get a copy from us, or even better yet (and quicker) go on over to Amazon and buy yourself a paperback or Kindle version to show Everett you support ZTL and his great work.  Until next time, Cheers and Mahalo!

After many months of waiting and testing cocktails, Tiki Caliente came and went.  The weather in Palm Springs was perfect for cocktails by the pool all day and all night.  The ZTL crew enjoyed hitting all the room parties.  Special mention to The Hair of the Dog Party and Flaming Tiki, two of our favorite rooms and cocktails.  Music by the Martini Kings poolside with Sonny Moon were another of the big highlights.  Meeting Sonny Moon at an after party later in the evening was the bees knees.  The Hula Girls played Sunshines favorite song Volcano.  That makes him very happy.  And for those that were lucky enough to see the Deadbeat Daddies on Friday, you know what a great performance it was.  Great to see them at the event and the first time we were able to see the guys live.  Then of course there was Moai Man, Listeners carrying around their Big Orange Richard mugs by PopTiki, our funner than fun room party, using pool floaties for innuendo, the LIVE podcast with great listeners in our hotel room, and so much more.  Listen for to hear everyones favorite tiki podcast game show “whats in Kalani’s bras.”  As if that isn’t enough we open up the mic to our audience for LIVE listener mail and sip the two fabulous cocktails you see below.  Cheers and Mahalo

Sunshine, Starshine and Kalani are tingling with anticipation over the upcoming weekend tiki event in Palm Springs.  Tiki Caliente 4 is May 18-20!  This week on the podcast we sip the two very cocktails we will be serving at our TC4 room party.  Gingers Passion and the Luckubus are two lovely drinks sure to tickle most fancies.  And, if you are attending the big shindig you will get to try them.  Just remember to tip your bar tender.  When in Palm Springs there is lots more to do besides the event.  Try the aerial tramway and ascend to the top of Mt. San Jacinto in just minutes.  Walk around town and get in some great shopping and visit some local art dealers and museums.  There are two casinos in town for those who want to try their hand at slots and tables, or maybe a las vegas style buffet.  Palm Springs is filled with posh boutique hotels worth visiting for their bars and cocktails alone.  See, plenty to keep you busy.  This week we also share some gardening tips for those with lots of space or just a few potted plants.  Sunshine has recently discovered UrbanZen.com where you can find out where to share in your community or learn more about choosing a life path that is better for your and those you care about.  Enjoy the show.  Cheers and Mahalo!

Before you listen to the podcast this week you better gather up your booze and make some Palm Springs Punch.  Our cocktail this week is great for one or a hundred.  Palm Springs mixologist Rory “Wildsville” man Snyder wanted to share his punch recipe with us, and this is just one more reason to look forward to Tiki Caliente III this May 20-22. Over two dozen faithful listeners pledged to mix up some punch while listening, we are literally drinking this cocktail all over the world.  And speaking of Tiki Caliente, Sunshine brings us the tiki news segment.  Get the dates and info for just about every big event this Summer.  Next we try filtering cheap rum to see if we can stretch our dollar in this tough economy.  Did we?  Listen to find out.  We also continue to support efforts to raise money for relief in Japan after the earthquakes and tsunami. Don’t let this tragedy become old news until people get the help they need.  And theres a lot more show squeezed in between.

Palm Springs Punch by Rory Snyder

1 1/2 oz of Coruba Spiced Rum
1/2 oz Trip Sec
1/2 oz Creme De Noyaux
…1 oz Pineapple Juice
