ZTL 152 There’s Rum in the Mountains of Colorado

Play

SQ Laguna BlueIt must be fall.  The temp here in the lounge dipped below 70 degrees this week.  That means it is time for some hot toddies.  Montanya Rum from Colorado is the star of our spiced apple cider drink du jour.  Montanya adds a special caramel note to the fresh pressed apple juice and allspice.  Getting toasted was never so easy.  And Pumpkin starts her rant about people sharing stories of their constipation. Jamie Lee Curtis better watch out, her yogurt adds may incite madness.  Sunshine announces boarding for the One Way Grand Canyon Tour.  Glenn Beck and company are getting ready for all the fun.  There’s plenty more so download, listen and drink up.  Mahalo!

ZTL 137 The Mini Bar Party with Michael Jackson

Play

Sunshine and Starshine in the lounge this week.  After some fairly painful dental work Sunshine is a bit under the influence of numbing agents so our drink this week is not the usual poison.  Using Beachbum Berry’s iPhone app we find a great coffee cocktail called Otto’s Grotto.  Try this one after dinner, with dessert etc.  Our subjects this week range from the west coast to the east.  We welcome about a dozen new listners and fans from the east coast thanks to listener Ronnie who did some great “word of mouth” for us.  Back here on the west coast was the memorial service for MJ: Michael Jackson.  The entire city of Los Angeles is a little ape s&!t today with all the goings on down at the Staples Center.  Both Sunshine and Starshine have their own unique point of view on the passing of the King of Pop.  On a more Zen note we go over a few thoughts on living a more stress free lifestyle and what exactly is ZEN anyway.  There is plenty more current events discusses as well, tune in and enjoy!

ZTL 124 Don the Beachcomber vs. Trader Vic’s

Play

This is the very first solo podcast for the Zen Tiki Lounge.  Don’ worry, Pumpkin is still around, but in order to keep our promise to bring you two podcasts each and every week Sunshine is flying solo on this one.  I was able to visit both the new Don the Beachcomber location in Huntington Beach and the new (yet to open) Trader Vic’s in Los Angeles.  The two tiki franchise locations are very different in feel and atmosphere.  Don’s is a partnership between the Kona restaurant and the Don the Beachcomber name.  The former Kona is a classic example of a mom and pop Polynesian palace on the coast of Orange County here in Southern California.  The food is outstanding.  Try the Kahlua pork, the house salad with ginger sesame dressing and the pineapple upside down a la mode.  And naturally the drinks are great and a little stiff.  On the other hand we have the more posh Trader Vic’s that is about to open in downtown Los Angeles.  This location is operated by an LA restaurant group that prides itself on their ability to sense what the public wants and delivers it well.  In the next few days Pumpkin, Sunshine and Starshine will venture to this mecca and get as sloshed as possible.  The decor is modern tiki, but not underdone in any sense.  This could be a great hot spot near the Staples and Nokia center in LA.  There are plenty of other reasons to listen including a giveaway, flocks of flamingos, the usual cocktail and much more.
