Make our classy holiday cocktails in your very own home:

Coquito (“little coconut”)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 12 cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 inch-long piece of fresh ginger, peeled
  • 1 15-ounce can of Coco Lopez
  • 1 12-ounce can of Carnation Evaporated Milk
  • 1.5  cup light rum (I use Cruzan)
  • Powdered cinnamon

Directions

  • Place water, cloves, cinnamon sticks and ginger in a small saucepan to create an infusion. Cook at medium heat until the mixture begins to boil.
  • After cooking, cover and let the infusion cool for 15 minutes. Remove cinnamon, cloves, and ginger.
  • Place the Coco Lopez, evaporated milk, rum and infusion in a blender. Cover and blend for 30 seconds.
  • Pour contents into a glass bottle with a cinnamon stick and refrigerate until cold.
  • Serve in 2-5 ounce glasses. Sprinkle top with powdered cinnamon.
  • Like an egg nog, the flavor improves with time. It’s quite good freshly made, but a 14-28 day aging in the refrigerator does wonders for it.
Christmas Island Sparkling Punch
1 bottle brut champagne
2 cups peppermint tea (brew 4 bags in two cups boiling water, chill before adding to punch)
30 oz pineapple juice
1.5 cups spiced rum (Sunshine’s Very Spicy Rum, or Cruzan 9)
4 oz Hibiscus syrup or REAL pomegranate grenadine
Lemon juice to adjust sweet/tartness to your liking
Add everything to a chilled punch bowl and use a large ice ring to keep it cold.
Spiced Caramel Apple
3/4 oz Caramel Apple Vodka
3/4 oz Spiced Rum
1.5 oz Apple Cider
Shake well with crushed ice and serve in a chilled cocktail glass.  Garnish with apple wedges that have been soaked in spiced rum overnight.

SQ DrunkFishAloha and welcome to our Holiday Spectaculaarrr part 1.  Sunshine and Pumpkin are toasting drinks in the Zen Tiki Lounge and giving our faithful listeners plenty of Holiday conversation topics and ideas for the merriest of cocktail filled gatherings.  Pumpkin is trying to keep her holiday a little Zen, all her gifts have a purpose and come in reusable wrapping.  Check out Baggu.com for simple reusable tote bags in tons of colors that you can toss your gifts into.  Best of all, no waste.  Pumpkin also gives us some tips on how to avoid the high calories at the party buffet line (check out all the tips at (Real Simple Magazine).  Sunshine simply suggests giving booze to your friends and family.  Everyone will eventually use or need a good drink so no waste and the glass or plastic bottle is 100% recyclable.  How wonderful.  There is plenty of drunken behavior and inappropriate comments to go around this podcast.  Tune in next week for our intoxicating Holiday music show and gift exchange.

SQ Laguna BlueIt must be fall.  The temp here in the lounge dipped below 70 degrees this week.  That means it is time for some hot toddies.  Montanya Rum from Colorado is the star of our spiced apple cider drink du jour.  Montanya adds a special caramel note to the fresh pressed apple juice and allspice.  Getting toasted was never so easy.  And Pumpkin starts her rant about people sharing stories of their constipation. Jamie Lee Curtis better watch out, her yogurt adds may incite madness.  Sunshine announces boarding for the One Way Grand Canyon Tour.  Glenn Beck and company are getting ready for all the fun.  There’s plenty more so download, listen and drink up.  Mahalo!

Aloha and Merry Christmas.  Thats the general theme of our show this week, our last podcast before we sail on past the busiest holiday of the year and set course for the new year.  Both Sunshine and Pumpkin share some thoughts on great things you can do or buy for that special someone.  But, most importantly we have finally launched the Zen Tiki Store.  Need exotica for your music collection?  We got it.   Maybe some good reading about your favorite subject, RUM.  We have the covered also.  Bar trinkets, mugs, party goods etc.  Check out the store and shop knowing that each purchase helps us get that much closer to the tiki bar of our dreams and an upgraded podcast for all of you.  We also discuss the usual rant and rave about sex changes, old people spraying fox urine on children, the new Trader Vic’s in Chicago, custody battles for kitties and so much more.  The cocktail this week was a bit on the fierce side and Pumpkin got a little loopy.  So much the better.  Listen, drink, enjoy.

Drink of the week: Glogg

Mix 1 part Glogg(found in specialty food stores, its a Scandanavian holiday beverage mix) with 1 part water.  2oz Glogg with 2oz water works well.  Heat mixture, but do not boil.  Pour into Irish coffee mug and add 1oz Rum or Vodka.  Makes a great holiday treat.

Aloha Tiki Friends!  Pumpkin is out of the lounge this week, so Starshine dropped by for cocktails and shenanigans.  We both wanted a little bit of holiday cheer so the holiday tunes are playing and the stories are reminiscing.  To fully enjoy the moment I whipped up both a hot cocktail and a nice cordial for dessert.  Both are great for any of you holiday outings, mix some up for friends.  After her first drinky, Starshine got a little unprofessional and we wouldn’t have it any other way.  Do you remember the Christmas sausage from way back, she asked?  Who wouldn’t.  And what about drag queens robbing jewelry stores, cleansing your colon, jogging off the celebratory calories and poking fun at the Brits for their version of what we call English.  Enjoy yourself with us.  We sure did.

Drink of the Week: The cold killer

1 tsp honey, 1 peppermint tea bag, 2 Ricola coughdrops, 5 oz boiling water, 1 oz vanilla vodka

In an Irish coffee mug, pour in boiling water on top of coughdrops.  Brew tea bag for just one minute and remove.  Add honey, lemon and the vodka last.  Drink one or two of these to make most colds blow away.

It may seem far to early to bring you the merry and exotic sounds of the holidays.  But, because the actual reality of exotica Xmas music is relatively rare we thought we should tell you where to get it early.  Sunshine shares a few artists that endeavored to mix polynesian percussion with the usual kitch of the season.  Arthur Lyman is most notable, probably the best example of this sub genre.  Music alone does not put the holidays right, so we bring you an island inspired hot punch cocktail that will please even the Virgin imbiber.  Think pineapple, spices, honey and your favorite rum.  Outstanding after a heavy meal, its like dessert in a tiki mug.  All things festive put aside, Sunshine and Pumpkin each share some much pent up bitching.  Our recent listener email suggests that a good bitch fest was in order anyway.  We aim to please.  Ted Haggard, Paula Abdul, dumbasses in minivans and artificial sweetners are just some of the bashed.  So sit back, drink your hot pineapple tea and spin yourself a vintage holiday….a little early.

This weeks drink: Hot Pineapple Tea

1 can Dole pineapple juice (try to find NOT from concentrate), 1/4 cup honey. 3 cinnamon sticks broken in a few pieces, 3 peppermint tea bags.

On the stove top or in a crock pot, add all ingredients except the tea bags.  Bring to a boil and then reduce heat to a low simmer.  Add tea bags, brewing tea for approx 10 minutes.  Remove the tea bags.  Serve as is, or as we do here in the Zen Tiki Lounge: add 1 to 1.5 ounces of your favorite rum to one glass of the tea.  We recommend Bacardi O, Captain Morgan spiced rum, Sailor Jerry, Myers Dark just to name a few.
