After six weeks of pretending she has a life, Pumpkin is back in the lounge and wasting no time getting back to basics. We start with the usual cocktail, a Bermuda Rum Swizzle suggested by Brad Beach of Beachoutpost.com. Exotica in the background, dim lighting and we’re off to the races. Pumpkin may have missed Tiki Oasis but she certainly didn’t forget to bring her calendar. The calendar of useless holidays that is. Sunshine is very excited for Sept 21st, International banana day!!! Maybe not so excited for National Wear a Hat Day. The smart move is to continue listening to show so you can find out how we celebrate banana day. Sunshine vows to whip up cocktails and appetizers worthy of such a wonderous event. Scattered amongst our various segments this week is the outstanding music of Martini Kings. We play four of their songs from the newest album Lost in Paradise. Big Mahalo to Tony for sending the album, it’s been on repeat for some time now. Pumpkin reveals that she is being stalked by prison inmates which leads to her finally getting around to Googling herself. Yes, thats right. Pumpkin Googles herself for the first time. Besides welcoming Pumpkin back to the lounge, cocktails, music and shenanigans, there are plenty of other surprises including listener mail, party planning tips and much much more.

Kalani and Sunshine in the lounge this week. We decided to polish off the rest of the house mixer and the cocktail we made with it was roughly a gallon. This set the mood for some great exotica and plenty of info on the upcoming tiki events around the globe. THEN it hit us. Why can’t people just be OK with other people? We didn’t figure out the answer to that one but we did debate the Prop 8 mystery to some extent. Come on, just mind your own business and let folks be who they are. No one is forcing anyone else to do anything they don’t want to. Insert second cocktail here. And now, Target and Best Buy are up to some shenanigans with recent political contributions to alleged anti-gay organizations. Again, why can’t people just get along? Well, we may have gotten off topic and diverted to a dozen or so tangents but we manage to provide a rant about SAVING THE COCKTAIL PARTY! In this economy we all need a nice libation and some friends to shoot the breeze with. So plan your cocktail party soon. Before the world really does end.

Sunshines Daiquiri:

3 cups chopped frozen fruit

2 cups crushed ice

6oz Rum (any kind you like, I prefer half silver and half amber or dark)

Splash of OJ or Pineapple juice, just enough to get things moving around in the blender

Put everything in a good blender and give it a whirl. Serves 2 to 3 depending on the size if your glass.

For the third time in over 5 years, all four hosts are here in the Zen Tiki Lounge. This episode may be a bit loud, reminiscent of a drunken frat party, but still very well worth the listen. Sunshine, Pumpkin, Starshine and Kalani are all here fighting to own the microphone. To get us started we try the newly concocted Sailor Mary cocktail. This punch like drink is bright red and well garnished and will be served at Tiki Oasis for our official room crawl party. Can’t make it to Tiki Oasis or one of the other weekend events this Summer, just stay tuned to this podcast for highlights and shenanigans. Pumpkin is ahead of her game this time and is sharing her list of BS holidays for the month of August. Don’t forget to celebrate national hair pulling day? (This weeks show is filled with a bit more profanity than usual. The result of bad booze) We are always open to NEW things. Even if the NEW thing is OLD. Listener Hula Harriet asked if we could make a cocktail using a pre bottled mixer. Sunshine is good enough behind the bar to work with pretty much anything, but when you are used to fresh juice and no artificial anything…..a mix just won’t due. Kalani and Sunshine dumped the drink and made something fresh. Starting the show with a less than fabulous cocktail may have tainted the entire show, as both hosts ranted about taboo political subjects. Illegal immigrants, Uganda hates gays, and Republicans love Jesus are just some of the less than tiki topics we were forced to discuss after bad liquor. After a more appropriate drink set in we get back into a Tiki Oasis update and tell you how to be on the podcast if attending Tiki O. Sunshine also vents about gifts that aren’t worth giving and how consumerism is killing America. Listen, drink, enjoy.

It’s been a while since your faithful hosts got genuinely tossed during the podcast. Both Sunshine and Pumpkin suck down a delicious drink made with Montanya Oro Rum, a smooth concoction that sneaks up on you. Our music this week is none other than the Bikini Beachcombers, some great tunes that make any day by the pool or lake that much more enjoyable. Hell, you could even spend a day doing yard work, sipping a mai tai and the easy sounds of drum and uke will take you away. Pumpkin brings us the tiki news this week, all about Southern California events of tiki and zen culture. She also shares some more info on super foods, those helpful little fruits and veggies that are both tropical and GOOD for you. Sunshine rants a bit about Linda Lingle, the flip flopping governor of Hawaii, who just can’t seem to decide if she likes or dislikes gay people. Or in political speak, she doesn’t want to commit to any platform until the very last minute so she can get as many votes as possible. Typical political BS. Stupid Linda Lingle. We toss in lots of other useful subjects and so not so useful blathering. Big Mahalos to Montanya Rum and the Bikini Beachcombers for making this episode fun for us and the listeners.

Pumpkin is fresh back from her trip to France with stories to tell. Kalani is just plain drunk, yet entertaining as always. And that leaves Sunshine to try and hold the show together. At the suggestion of a listener we try a fabulous cocktail from Beachbum Berry’s latest book, Remixed. The Mexican Headhunter is tequila drink with a long list of ingredients. Two of the ingredients, the honey mix and sage syrup you will have to make from scratch just to enjoy the beverage. But after a few minutes in the kitchen you too can enjoy a Mexican Headhunter. Not only do we have a special drink but also some great Summer music. Our featured band this week is The Exotics and their album “Lost Album.” This surf rock extravaganza is full of solid tunes and an awesome garnish for a day at the pool with a cocktail. After the headhunter set in, Sunshine rants about the EVIL Meg Whitman and her campaign to buy the governors office in California. Pumpkin tells us all about the totally BS holidays in June, including take your dog to work day. The Cruzan Blue Coco Mojito is a damn refreshing beverage if we do say so ourselves. This drink is just a taste (pun intended) of the great stuff you can find at Beachoutpost. But now that we have some booze in us and the tunes are inspiring, it turns to Gary Coleman. Yep! Gary has left us for good and both of your hosts have a few words of praise and admiration. Sunshine also chats a little about last weeks Tiki-Caliente and calls upon the spirits of the Hukilau for good karma. While we were recording this podcast our friends over in Ft. Lauderdale are living it up at the Hukilau and the world famous Mai Kai. We admit that jealousy is within us. ZTL 172 Tiki-Caliente II Recap

So you may not have been able to run off to Palm Springs this weekend, but Sunshine has put together a recap of the weekend event. The heat was intense but so was the music, cocktails and shenanigans. Rory Snyder put on a great event with excellent music and cocktails. Martini Kings, Tikiyaki Orchestra, Elminators and Hula Girls were all there. Cherry Capri made an appearance by the pool and hosted the fashion show. Trio Restaurant hosted the bars and Coruba and Appleton Rums sponsored. If you have a chance to get to Palm Springs we recommend you visit the Caliente Tropics for some relaxation by the pool and some great drinks to go with all the heat and sun. The weekend proved to be very memorable. Enjoy the show.

Our show this week is a solo with Sunshine. The ladies are all out doing whatever it is that ladies do. Sunshine hangs out in the lounge to share about his recent visit to Frankie’s Tiki Room in Las Vegas. If you haven’t been to Frankie’s you need to get your butt over there, just a few blocks off the famous strip. The drinks are great, the ambiance is dim and subdued. We also discuss a little about the upcoming solo project (podcast) that Sunshine’s alter ego has been working on. As if there weren’t enough people telling you how to reduce your impact on our already burdened planet, heres one more. But, from the point of view of someone who is actually trying to make changes in behavior and lifestyle that will have a net beneficial impact on resources. A bit of a different show for sure, hope you enjoy.

Everyone wants to be GREEN. But not everyone tries very hard to get there. Those of us here in the Zen Tiki Lounge would like to think that we have made lifestyle changes that are permanent and not just the “in thing.” Save water and electricity. Don’t use things at all when you don’t have to. Buy organic/green booze? Yep, its out there. Fresh fruits for your cocktails can be sourced from organic and eco friendly farms. Local farmers markets are a great way to support your nearby farmer and reduce your impact on the planet. These are just a few of the ideas and thoughts in this weeks show. But don’t worry. We kept with tradition and included plenty of silly behavior and off the wall commentary. Sunshine also gives his glowing review of Beachbum Berry’s newest book “Remixed.” This jam packed cocktail history book will keep you busy making tiki drinks all Summer and beyond.

ZTL 169 Mom Wants an Oil Spill for Mothers Day

Mothers Day is upon us! For many of us we wouldn’t dream of doing mothers day without a drink. We imbibe a finely tuned grapefruit, ginger and spice concoction that Mom will love as much as you will. After Mom gets a little loose its time to get into a healthy little argument. Perhaps you have differing views on the mid term political debate. Maybe you can’t come to agree who caused the Lousiana oil spill. Regardless, this episode will give you and Mom something to chat about. Kalani is in the lounge with Sunshine and as usual the conversation gravitates towards the political and sociological. Mind you intoxicated debate. We both agree, we are a hoot. Check out the new album compilation by Sven Kirsten, it’s about the best compilation out there for a dimly lit tiki bar.

Coral Beauty

1 oz Canton Ginger Liquor

1 oz Cruzan White Rum

2 oz Fresh Grapefruit Juice (Yellow)

1/2 oz Ginger Sour Syrup

1/2 oz Coruba Dark Rum float

Mix all but dark rum in shaker with crushed ice. Pour into a wide clear glass (brandy snifter) filled with crushed ice. Float dark rum on top. Garnish with a grapefruit twist and cherry. Ginger Sour Syrup: To 1 cup 151 Rum, add 1/2 cup fresh chopped and peeled ginger, zest of two ruby red grapefruits, 40 allspice berries crushed. Let it sit covered overnight. In another jar, mix 1 cup sugar, the juice of 2 grapefruits and juice of 3 lemons till the sugar is dissolved. Carefully strain solids out of rum mixture with coffee filter or cheese cloth. Strain juice mixture through filter as well to remove pulp. Combine both mixtures in a larger jar or bottle. Chill. Stores for about 90 days. Great in cocktails, iced tea and club soda.

ZTL 168 Cinco de Mayo means what?

This week on the show we start off with a drink any idiot could make. Just toss some ice, fruit and booze in the old blender and wallaaaah! You have a Boozie! The great thing about a Boozie is you really can mix just about anything. Fresh fruit frozen in chunks works great with a few cups of ice and a good pour of your favorite rum. And, its “healthy.” With a drink in hand you just need to head over to the handy dandy media device of your choosing and put on some exotic tunes. Dim the lights and listen to Sunshine and Pumpkin. Pumpkin made it to the lounge this week even though she is still a bit under the weather. Sunshine is healthy as a horse and can drink almost as much. Our conversation this week includes everyday uses for vodka, farmers markets, rediculous holidays, Summer tiki news and some other stuff we can’t recall. So put us in your iThingy and listen till ya puke.

This week Pumpkin is still sick and requested a virgin drink. As much as I hated to oblige, I made her the same drink I was having sans the booze. It actually tasted pretty damn good but I couldn’t get over the missing kick from alchiehol. I discovered that my favorite two flavors of jelly bean just happen to suppose a societal outcome. Yeah, the rest of the show is pretty much like that as well. Pumpkin remains a bit loopy from the cold meds and I enjoy a Puckered Parrot. Try one for yourself at Tiki Oasis this August.

Every now and again we record a show that has a life of its own. This week Sunshine and Starshine sat down with a lovely Oahu Sling and a page full of notes. Just moments after the sling kicked in we started several tangents about anything but what we intended to talk about. ZTL 165 The Guilty Wahine

Have you ever wondered what kind of drink fits on occasion? Heres a cocktail for an occasion some of us have personal experience with. The Guilty Wahine: start with the fresh squeezed juice of 2 good size limes, add 3/4 oz. coconut cream, 1.5 oz. Cruzan Coconut Rum, add a splash of Anejo Rum. Shake it real good with crushed ice and pour into a tall sexy glass. Top with a good spiced rum like Sailor Jerry or Zaya Gran Reserve, 1 oz. Garnish with a lime wedge pierced by a sword and cherry. Now sit back in your chair, put the straw to your lips, inhale the aroma of the citrusy sweet paradise, enjoy. Now what does this have to do with that Wahine? Well, here it comes. A guy comes home from a long day working the front desk at a beach front resort. He slips off his hard shoes and feels the floor with his bare feet. Ahhhhh, so much better. Grabs the remote, sits down and puts on his favorite show. Coming into the room, SHE says “would you like a nice drink?” He eagerly accepts. After 10 minutes of watching the big wave surf classic she brings him an innocent looking frosty concoction. Without a word he starts sucking it down. Sour like lime-aid but sweet and creamy like coconut pie. The spice rum float made it tempting to drink from the top as well. And suddenly the drink was gone. She asks “you want another one?” He was already shaking his head before she finished her words. Sure, she says. But first I wanted to tell you that my mother will be staying with us for a few weeks. She will be here, (Surprised) “Oh, theres the door now.” The guy stares at her “innocent” looking smile. He looks into her eyes and says “lets not forget about that second drink.” He thought to himself that he knew that her mother was coming. She always makes me this drink when she’s not telling me something. At least he could look forward to the mother in law visiting in one way.

Yep, just a few more days till the U.S.A celebrates a completely commercial holiday. St. Patrick’s day has become something that most people in Ireland would turn their nose up at. And for good reason. So Pumpkin gives a little history and some ideas for the vegans who want to celebrate. Sunshine is attempting to do nothing educational this week unless you consider developing a hatred for Meg Whitman and educational experience. But perhaps you do? Meg Whitman is running for governor of CA. To put it simple, she is anti-human rights. Enough said, she is evil. There is plenty of rum sloshing around this week, Sunshine gets a bit schnockered for sure. Join us in the lounge and mix yourself a drink.

ZTL 161 Raw Food and Bogus Cocktails

Life is meant to be enjoyed. Our senses bring us those joys in many forms. So it sucks to tell you that our senses were not exactly “enjoying” our drink selection this week. Sunshine picked a 4 pack of Hula Girl bottled drinks. What a hot sweet mess that was. Luckily we have plenty more to share. Pumpkin has been recently grossed out by OLDER people and their ability to use more than ample amounts of perfume. She is also concerned about the Girl Scout cookie recall, but probably not why you think. Sunshine has created a new super hero he is happy to talk about as well as some of the perks of being extremely obese. We announce our fourth book challenge. You may notice that the audio on this weeks show is a bit…..crappy. Well, when drinking and recording a podcast things tend to get a little screwed up. But, the show must go on.

Our show this week is tangent upon tangent. Sometimes making sense is too difficult. Starshine is just as tired of Tiger Woods as Sunshine is, we both think he should shut the hell up and leave us all alone. A Ugandan minister is trying to scare his flock by showing them hours of gay porn in church!!! What kind of church is that? Sunshine shares a little info on some new tiki schtuff, tikimasters.com for example is a great site that stocks plenty of masks, decor and art for your tiki bar or patio. We offer up a third copy of The Parrot Talks in Chocolate to the listener who makes us a sock puppet of a parrot and sends us proof. That sounds like fun. Can you believe it has been 4 years since Sunshine and Pumpkin first sat behind the tiki bar and hit record? Since then we have met lots of great people and added Starshine and Kalani to our hosting lineup. What was just an experiment has become a ritual. At the end of each work week we jump behind the bar, mix some cocktails and let it all out. We have traveled across the USA and enjoyed every minute.
