ZTL 190 It’s Halloween in Your Favorite Tiki Bar

Play

We love our yearly Halloween party.  All of us here in the Zen Tiki Lounge pride ourselves on good costumes, great parties and plentiful cocktails.  Sunshine and Starshine are in the lounge this week with some spooky drinks and creepy sounding exotica to complete the mood.   Some of you may be surprised just how much exotica is perfect for a Halloween party.  Sunshine plays eight great tracks to get you in the morbid mood.  Our banter this week is light, more music than anything.  Enjoy the show!

Sunshines favorite Halloween party exotica:

Tikiyaki Orchestra: Crossing Kilauea, Yma Sumac: Jivaro, The Tiki Tones: Night of the Tikis, Kahuna Kawentzmann: Passage to Pappeete, Waitiki: Satyritar, Clouseaux: Shrunken Heads, Robert Drasnin: Voodoo, Kava Kon: Zombie

Halloween Spiced Rum Punch:

30oz Yellow Grapefruit Juice

30oz Pineapple Juice (unsweetened)

24oz Spiced Rum

24oz Pommegranate Vodka

10oz Ginger Sour Syrup*

4oz Dons Mix**

Add everything to your punch bowl.  Use an ice ring to keep it cool.  (use a bundt cake pan fill with water and frozen for an ice ring.  Or use dry ice for fog in your punch).

*The recipe for Ginger Sour Syrup is available in episode 166, or click here

**Dons Mix is a classic mixer from Don the Beachcomber.  Click here for the recipe

ZTL 189 The Left Overs Cocktail Party

Play

Another week another podcast.  Sunshine and Starshine relax in the Zen Tiki Lounge with a nice warm coffee grog (listen for the recipe), enjoy some great exotica and chat.  Sunshine asks Starshine to fiddle with his iPhone so he can tell everyone about the new Tiki Bar app.  Want to learn your cocktail recipes, or correct procedure for preparing about 40 different cocktails?  Play this realistic and fun game.  Be the bartender at your local tiki bar, serve quirky patrons, collect tips and learn cocktail recipes in the process.  Starshine suggests throwing a green cocktail party by serving left overs.  And, just may have invented the Left Overs Cocktail Party.  The host prepares the drinks, the guests bring whatever they have left from Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter etc.  We all have mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans, snacks, pies etc. left over after our holiday shindigs.  What better way to get rid of them.  Invite your drunk friends over and eat up.  Keeping things green, Sunshine is talking about whiskey and rum becoming one of the next biofuels.  Could the waste product from rum distillation power your golf cart, small car?  It could in a community near you.  Naturally we discuss some listener mail and banter on about whatever the coffee grog inspires.  Enjoy!

ZTL 188 Spiced Rum is Blasphemus?

Play

What do Sailor Jerry, Foursquare, Kilo Kai and other selected spiced rums have in common?  Well, not much now that we taste them all together.  On this weeks show Sunshine and Starshine go through the painstaking process of trying six spiced rums just so we can tell our faithful listeners whats worth the money.  As it turns out, Foursquare and Kilo Kai are the house favorites, followed by Sailor Jerry, the safe bet.  After several shots and some nice electronic exotica we dive into this weeks subject matter.  Apparently Facebook is blocking the legalizing of marijuana, the infamous Linda Lingle governor of Hawaii is up to no good again, and Oprah is one step closer to taking over the world.  Sunshine Introduces a new character to the podcast, a new super hero that uses cocktails as his super power.  Wouldn’t you like to stop time by having a drink?  What would you do while time was stopped?  Sunshine insists this power should only be used for good and maybe a bit of shenanigans in the process.  And lastly we throw in some listener mail and feedback just to prove we listen to what you all have to say.  Our musical guest this week are the Revomatics and their new song just out of the studio “Tsunami.”  Click the link to find their myspace page and check out more of their surfy groove music.  Enjoy, Live, Listen!

ZTL 187 Jet Pilots and Oyster Herpes

Play

Ladies and Gentlemen, put your tray tables in the upright position, strap in and pour yourself a Jet Pilot.  Sunshine and Pumpkin are sipping the classic stiff libation that is said to have put many a person in HIGH spirits.  Some great exotica gets us in the mood to start celebrating fall in the Zen Tiki Lounge.  Pumpkin is ready to share her list of totally BS holidays in October, including “nut day,” “ride your mule day,” and “frugal day.”  We will have to put something together for nut day, thats a naughty cocktail waiting to happen.  And no fall kick off would be complete without making sure your bar is all stocked for cool weather cocktails.  Not sure what mixes or liquors to have?  Sunshine goes over the quick and dirty list of must have bar needs to keep any cocktail party or family gathering fun and saucy.  Not into the hard liquor?  Try having a hard cider party and watching your favorite horror flick.  Cider has come a long way and can be almost as exotic as the most intense tiki drink.  Look for a local micro brew cider and pair some tasty appetizers like squash soups, pies, cookies etc.  As you can see, there is plenty to celebrate this fall.  But, something to beware of while planning your shindig.  Oyster herpes are big problem this year.  Lots of folks like a nice oyster shooter or maybe even a stew or gumbo, always great for the fall crock pot recipe.  But global warming threatens the soft and smooshy molluscs with a VD like problem that is usually reserved for slutty reality stars.  Make sure you know where your oyster has been before enjoying.  Speaking of slutty, Pumpkin gives us her take on all the popular ‘easy’ looking Halloween costumes available for girls with little time.  Now thats plenty of show.  Enjoy!
