ZTL 143 Kidnapped and Drunk in California

Kidnappings are all the rage these days.  The most unfortunate thing about kidnapping is that there are so many other people who didn’t want their kids, yet only parents who love their children suffer kidnapping.  This is reason enough to share a soothing tiki drink with your friends.  And thats exactly what Sunshine, Starshine and Kalani do.  In order to ensure that the show has some sense of tiki, Sunshine answers some listener email requests to explain the economics of the home bar.  Starshine is captivated by the AMC show Madmen and is jealous of the hair and high heels.  Kalani shares a story that is far to interesting to spill in print, just listen.  Mahalo for listening and tell a friend.

  • Hi there,
I’m just listening to this episode and really have to wonder about your booze advises. The Bacardi Rum you can buy here in Germany is so bad you just can use it to clean your Tiki bathroom. I would always prefer the Havana Club 3 anos (yeah, I know you can’t buy) or the appleton white or – and this one is soooo great in a daiquiri – the St James blanc from Martinique. It smells just like raw sugar cane and is so tasty. Try it, if you haven’t already.
And the Captain Morgan’s? The spiced one I just tried a few weeks ago is terrible. I try to infuse it with pineapple – won’t make it better, I tried to mix it in drinks – to dominating :-( So it ends up next to the Bacardi in the cleaning section of my bathroom.
Brown rum – the meyr’s was my starting rum as well. It’s OK, I liked it. But after some time, I tried the Appleton V/X and found out it is better, more intense Jamaican taste and it is cheaper :-) Have you tried it? What do you think about the yellow cabbed Old Pascas Jamaican Rum? Also really tasty!

Ok, now I turn back on the show :-)
Stefan – sorry for writing all over, it’s Saturday morning, nothing to do and so I catch up with some ZTL-Shows

  • Aloha Stefan,

You give some great suggestions for RUM in your comment. Some of which are my favorites as well. In response to your question about using Bacardi and Myers: those are suggestions for people who are just starting a home tiki bar. I don’t recommend that people put a lot of money or time into the booze right away. Be sure you know what drinks you like. Sweet, sour, strong, exotic ingredients etc. As your experiences grows and your palate expands it is time for many of the Rums that you have mentioned.

    My current favorites are:
Light: 10 Cane rum, Wray & Nephews Overproof, Appleton White Rum, Flor de Cana White rum and Oronoco Rum

    Amber/Medium:
Mount Gay, Plantation Old Reserve, Pyrat Rum Pistol, Montanya Rum

    Dark:
El dorado 15, Appleton Estate 12, Mocambo 15, Cruzan Black Strap

    Spiced:
Sailor Jerry, Kilo Kai, Zaya Gran Reserve,

Mahalo for the comments and keep drinking/listening,

    Sunshine
